“Barbie” secured eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, and Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera. The film also earned nods for Best Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, and Production Design.
Notably, director Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director, with the category featuring Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), and Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Only one female director, Justine Triet, received a nomination for helming the acclaimed French courtroom drama, “Anatomy of a Fall,” which won the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
Margot Robbie, who played a pivotal role in the movie, was overlooked in the Best Actress category. The nominees for Best Actress include Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”).
Ryan Gosling, acknowledging Gerwig and Robbie’s contributions, stated, “There is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”
Although Gerwig and Robbie missed out on Best Director and Best Actress nominations, Gerwig received recognition for Best Adapted Screenplay for her co-written work with Noah Baumbach. Additionally, Robbie’s role as executive producer contributed to the film’s nomination for Best Picture, acknowledging her efforts in steering Mattel toward portraying the character and the company in innovative ways.
