Jane Austen’s legacy is being revisited through exhibitions spanning from New York to Hampshire, showcasing a wide selection—from her writings to adaptations in popular culture—on her 250th birthday.

Marking the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth, exhibitions in both the United States and the United Kingdom have placed the author back in the spotlight of literary and cultural discourse. The displays range from Austen’s letters and personal belongings to film adaptations and traces of her influence in everyday life, highlighting not only the author herself but also how her legacy has evolved over time.

Through her six novels, from Pride and Prejudice to Emma, Austen left a mark not only on literary history but also on social life. With her ironic wit, she navigated the strict social rules of 19th-century England, bringing women’s voices to the center of literature. It is no coincidence that her work continues to be adapted for theater, cinema, and television; Austen’s sentences have long transcended her own era.

A Lively Mind in New York

At the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, the exhibition A Lively Mind: Jane Austen at 250 opens a window into the author’s intellectual world. Letters to her sister Cassandra, early American editions of her works, and contemporary artist Amy Sherald’s painting A Single Man in Possession of a Good Fortune carry Austen’s resonance two centuries forward. The exhibition runs until September 14.

Expanding the Legacy in Hampshire

In Hampshire, where Austen lived, celebrations continue with a series of events. Jane Austen’s House in Chawton presents Austenmania!, an exhibition exploring the author’s impact on popular culture since the 1990s. Visitors can see scripts, set notes, and posters from productions ranging from Clueless to the BBC’s iconic adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

Another significant exhibition, Beyond the Bonnets: Working Women in Jane Austen’s Novels, brings together the stories of often-overlooked characters in Austen’s novels alongside the real women of the era. From innkeepers and shop owners to widows supporting themselves, these real-life stories intersect with Austen’s ironic lines, offering a glimpse into the fragile yet resilient lives of 18th-century women.

Irony That Transcends Time

250 years later, Austen remains with us—not only in her fictional heroines but also in the invisible women among them. These celebrations serve as a reminder of the path she carved in literature, illustrating why her sharp, incisive gaze still feels so vital today.
