World-renowned photographer Nan Goldin has put her signed prints up for sale as part of Pictures for Purpose. The proceeds will be donated to Sulala Animal Rescue, an organization helping injured and displaced animals in Gaza. Goldin’s art has long been inseparable from the social and political struggles she has championed. She is known for her work highlighting the devastating impact of the AIDS crisis and her activism against the Sackler family and the opioid epidemic, consistently fighting tirelessly for change.

A long-time advocate for Palestine, Goldin is now contributing to the latest edition of the Pictures for Purposeinitiative, which aims to support urgent humanitarian efforts. Pictures for Purpose has previously raised funds for causes such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes, and child victims of war in Gaza. This time, the initiative is reaching out to help stray animals injured and displaced by the ongoing war in Gaza.

Three different open-edition signed photographs by Goldin will be available for sale until April 17, 2025. All proceeds will go to Sulala Animal Rescue, an organization founded by the Sulala family in Gaza that provides free veterinary services to animals affected by the war. This aid initiative is one of the causes closest to Goldin’s heart.

In a statement for the campaign, the artist said:

“Sulala Animal Rescue has inspired passionate support around the world. Saeed Al-Err and his sons have acted with great honor and humility throughout this horrific year and a half. Their boundless compassion for animals is a reflection of their deep commitment to the innocent victims of human-made disasters. They have established a free clinic to treat injured animals, opened a children’s school, and worked to help children cope with the trauma they are facing. One of their main goals is to teach the community to approach animals with kindness. Being a small part of the Sulala family is my greatest honor and joy. I pray that they can continue their crucial work.”

Born in 1953, American photographer and activist Nan Goldin is regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary photography, known for her intimate and striking images. Her most famous work, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1986), focuses on her “chosen family” — the marginalized communities and LGBTQ individuals of the post-punk era — exploring themes of love, addiction, violence, and solidarity with profound sincerity. Through her activism against the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s and more recently against the opioid epidemic, Goldin has made her art a powerful vehicle for social struggle. She is also the founder of P.A.I.N. (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now), a group targeting the Sackler family’s role in the opioid crisis. Goldin continues to live and work in New York.
