Chicago, one of the longest-running productions in Broadway history, brings the world of crime, passion and fame of the 1920s to Istanbul. The musical, which was first staged on Broadway in 1975 and became a classic over the years, will meet the audience at Zorlu PSM between April 15-20.
The musical, which has gained worldwide success with its satirical story inspired by real events, unforgettable songs, eye-catching costumes and impressive choreography, has been opening the curtain at the Ambassador Theatre on Broadway for 25 years without interruption.
With music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, the musical is based on the play of the same name by journalist Maurine Dallas Watkins. As a journalist, Watkins covered the sensational criminal trials of the 1920s, exposing the influence of the justice system and the media on crime. This story moved to Broadway and became a worldwide sensation.
The musical centers on Roxie Hart, a chorus girl who dreams of becoming a vaudeville star. Leaving her cheating husband behind in her pursuit of fame, Roxie commits murder in a fit of rage when her lover tries to leave her. Thrown into the Cook County Jail, the young woman thinks it’s all over for her, but it’s not, as she quickly climbs the ladder to fame.
Her resourceful lawyer Billy Flynn manipulates the press to make Roxie one of Chicago’s most talked-about figures. In prison, she crosses paths with Velma Kelly, a well-known vaudeville star who murdered her husband and sister. Although the two are initially in competition, they form an unlikely alliance over time.
Considered one of the most important productions of Broadway and West End, the musical Chicago has been staged by famous names such as Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera and Ann Reinking. The musical, which has been revived with countless actors over the years, is now preparing to meet the audience on Istanbul stages with its original Broadway production. The musical will meet the audience at Zorlu PSM between April 15-20.
