American contemporary artist, writer, and curator Jason Stopa brings his work to Turkey for the first time with the Interior Monument exhibition. Hosted at Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery, located in Villa Ipranosyan, the exhibition will feature a special selection of works starting January 30.
Exploring Light, Color, and Space
Jason Stopa adopts an approach that questions the relationship between color, light, and space, while also exploring the boundaries between digital and physical painting. His creative process involves using oil paint with broad brushstrokes and transparent layers, inviting viewers to engage with the materiality and physical presence of the artwork beyond digital imagery.
The artist believes that painting is not merely a combination of color and form but exists as a part of light itself. With this perspective, he creates works that blur the boundaries of light and spatial perception. The interplay of tension and harmony between light, color, and space in his paintings takes the viewer on both a visual and emotional journey.
Intertwined with Architecture
The Interior Monument exhibition is shaped by a focus on abstract art and Stopa’s personal history. Drawing inspiration from his interest in the history of architecture and art, the artist reflects these influences in his works, particularly referencing Archizoom’s unrealized No-Stop City project. This visionary project imagines a city with no boundaries, extending infinitely.
Stopa’s paintings begin with a grid-like structure, which he disrupts using arabesque forms and intuitive decisions, visually conveying themes of freedom and ecological sustainability within a modern city. The exhibition also includes paper-based works featuring window motifs, inspired by early 20th-century French paintings. These motifs explore the potential of the window as both a physical and virtual element that shapes visual perception.
Specially created for this exhibition, the works on display at Villa Ipranosyan from January 30 to March 1 challenge viewers to constantly question and reconsider what they see and perceive.
