Historic Artemis Bath To Be Recovered

/

To transform the Artemis Bath, located in the ancient city of Epiphaneia in Hatay’s Erzin district, into a tourist attraction, authorities have begun working meticulously to open the renowned site to visitors with a designated tour route.

Famous for its mosaic figures, the historical bath dates back to the Roman era and is supplied by the ancient city’s aqueduct. “The project is expected to impact both Hatay and Erzin’s tourism industries significantly. As the team of the ancient city of Epiphaneia, we will begin our work with the bath,” she said. “This site will become a central hub and focal point. We aim to showcase the exceptional and well-preserved mosaics to the public once again.”

Associate Professor Banu Özdilek, the project’s scientific advisor, stated that they have initiated work on both the tour route and the installation of a protective roof for the historical structure, to complete the project within a year.

Three mosaic panels, previously discovered in the bath and transferred to the Hatay Archeology Museum, will be returned to their original location, with faithful reproductions of the original artworks created as part of the project.

“We’ll train the women of our district to reproduce the mosaics, which will contribute both to the region’s development and the preservation of this long-standing tradition,” Özdilek explained.

Özdilek emphasized the importance of allowing tourists to explore this historically significant bath in her statement to the state-run Anadolu Agency.
