Centre Pompidou, one of the world’s premier modern art museums based in Paris, has put a pause on its plans to open a satellite branch in New York. Originally set to open in Jersey City in 2027, the project is now suspended indefinitely.
The decision follows concerns from local authorities about the high costs, which included around $18 million in public redevelopment funds, as reported by the New Jersey Monitor.
This news is a setback for the Pompidou, which is gearing up for a major renovation back in Paris. The French state is backing a €262 million ($281 million) project starting in September 2025 for asbestos removal and other refurbishments. Additionally, the museum has a €186 million plan to redevelop its art spaces, looking for other funding sources to support this.
State auditors have criticized the museum’s finances, calling its economic model “unsustainable” and noting that the renovation project lacked proper guidance and secure funding.
Despite this suspension, the Pompidou Center stated that it will continue discussions with the mayor of Jersey City to explore the future of the project. This would have been the museum’s fifth international partnership, adding to existing collaborations in Malaga, Shanghai, Brussels, and with the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
