Bonhams’ upcoming Modern and Contemporary Art sale in Hong Kong will feature “Infinity,” an unseen painting by Yayoi Kusama. Created in 1995, this red-and-black artwork combines two of Kusama’s iconic motifs: dots and infinity nets. With an estimated value exceeding $5 million, the painting is a rare example of Kusama’s artistic fusion.

Comprising two distinct sections, the composition showcases black dots against a red backdrop on one side and a black-and-red net on the other. Describing the piece as “immersive and compelling,” Bonhams emphasized the endless looping and repeating patterns as central motifs recurrent throughout Kusama’s career, reflecting both her personal journey and inner psyche.

As per a report released earlier this year, Kusama emerged as the top-selling contemporary artist in 2023. Her artworks fetched a total of $80.9 million at auction during that year, surpassing the previous year’s leading seller, David Hockney, by over $30 million.

The highest-priced Kusama artwork sold in 2023 was “A Flower,” a painting from 2024, which garnered nearly $10 million at an auction held by Christie’s in Hong Kong.

In April 2023, a collection of five Kusama pieces, all created within the past two decades, fetched $22.9 million at an evening sale hosted by Sotheby’s, also in Hong Kong.

In recent years, Kusama’s popularity in the art market has soared, propelled by her cultural impact, highlighted by a retrospective at the M+ Museum in 2023 and a widely publicized Louis Vuitton campaign, referred to as the Kusama Industrial Complex.
