The film “Hayat” (Life), directed by the acclaimed Zeki Demirkubuz, has been selected as Türkiye’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best International Film category. The announcement was made through the social media channels of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s General Directorate of Cinema, which also expressed its support for the film and wished it success on its journey to the Oscars.
“Hayat” tells the story of Hicran, a young woman who flees her home to escape an unwanted engagement forced upon her by her controlling father. The film follows her struggles in Istanbul and the eventual confrontation with her fiancé, Rıza. While the film stars Miray Daner and Burak Dakak in the lead roles, it also features strong performances from Melis Birkan, Cem Davran, Umut Kurt, Doğu Demirkol, and Caner Cindoruk.
Initially indifferent to Hicran’s departure, Rıza begins to feel troubled as time passes and decides to track her down in Istanbul. His pursuit leads to a confrontation that forces both characters to face their true feelings and desires.
As Türkiye’s representative, “Hayat” will vie for a spot among the 15 shortlisted films to be announced on December 17. The final five nominees for the Best International Film category will be revealed along with all other Oscar nominees on January 17, 2025.
With its emotionally charged narrative and a stellar cast, “Hayat” aims to leave a significant mark on the international stage, highlighting the enduring power of Turkish cinema.
