One of the phased restoration projects in the Harem section of Topkapı Palace, overseen by the Presidency of National Palaces, has been completed.
The Concubines Courtyard (Cariyeler Taşlığı) and Bath, along with the Kuşhane Kitchen, have been newly opened to visitors. These areas include the structures integral to the Ottoman Harem organization. The Concubines Courtyard, the smallest in the Harem, is surrounded by the dormitories of the concubines.
Constructed in the mid-16th century, the courtyard includes facilities such as a Turkish bath, laundry, and pantry, along with residential quarters.
The Concubines Baths section, among the oldest buildings in Topkapı Palace, has been opened to visitors for the first time following restoration. It comprises cold, hot, and warm rooms.
Approximately 120 artifacts reflecting the period and bath culture are now on display in the bath. Additional sections in the Concubines Courtyard will be opened later this year as restorations are completed.
Another newly accessible area is the Kuşhane Kitchen, where, according to historical records, special meals for the sultans were prepared. This kitchen showcases items like copper pots and spoons from the Topkapı Palace Collection.
The kitchen also features silver pots called “Kuşhane,” from which the kitchen derives its name, and a silicone statue dressed in period costume, offering visitors a historical experience.
İlhan Kocaman, Head of the Department of National Palaces, noted that the Kuşhane Kitchen was the sultan’s private kitchen.
“We began the restoration of Topkapı Palace in 2019. The restorations, particularly of the harem and sections in the third courtyard, have been completed periodically. The restorations of the Seferli Koğuşu [Dormitory of Campaigners], the treasury, and the sacred relics in the third courtyard are nearing completion, and we will soon open these areas to visitors,” he said.
Kocaman emphasized their goal of making every part of Topkapı Palace accessible to visitors. However, due to the structural characteristics of the buildings, some sections might remain closed. Despite this, the aim is to swiftly introduce the other sections to the public.
