Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has announced on his social media accounts that a new Republic Museum will open in Taksim.
According to information from IMM, Taksim Maksem, which gave its name to Taksim Square, is turning into the Republic Museum. One of the square’s symbol buildings, Taksim Maksem, will be opened with a ceremony on Saturday, June 8, at 18.00.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and IMM Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat announced on social media that a “Republic Museum” will be opened in Taksim Square. After the announcement, there was a debate about the symbolic significance of opening a “Republic Museum” in Taksim Square, located within the boundaries of Beyoğlu Municipality, which has been under AKP rule for 20 years.
Ekrem İmamoğlu shared the following on his X account: ‘Taksim Maksem, which gave its name to Taksim Square, becomes a Republic Museum.’
Taksim Maksem, built by Mahmud I between 1732-33, restored by IMM Heritage. Built to distribute water to the city from Taksim, Taksim Maksem has an octagonal shape, coarse stone body and a pyramidal, octagonal roof. The maksem was used for a long time to distribute the water to Istanbul.
