Rabbi Isaac Haleva: 1940-2025

Chief Rabbi of Turkey, Rabbi Isaac Haleva, passes away at the age of 85.

Chief Rabbi of Turkey, Rabbi Isaac Haleva, has passed away at the age of 85. The news of his passing was announced by the Turkish Jewish Community through their X (formerly Twitter) account.

In a statement shared on social media, the Turkish Jewish Community said:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our esteemed leader, Chief Rabbi Isaac Haleva, who dedicated his life to promoting peace and unity. He led our community for many years with unwavering commitment to these values. Baruch Dayan HaEmet.”

Şalom Newspaper also reported his passing, stating:
“We mourn the loss of Chief Rabbi Isaac Haleva, who has led the Turkish Jewish Community for many years, uniting and guiding us with wisdom and dedication.”

Rabbi Isaac Haleva

Born in Istanbul in 1940, Rabbi Isaac Haleva completed his high school education at Beyoğlu Jewish High School before pursuing higher education at the Porat Yosef Theological Academy in Jerusalem. He graduated with the title of “Rav” (Rabbi).

Returning to Turkey in 1961, Rabbi Haleva served the Turkish Jewish Community in various religious roles. For 27 years, he taught Religious Ethics and Hebrew Language courses in Jewish schools. Additionally, he lectured in Hebrew at the Theology Faculties of Marmara University and Sakarya University.

A prolific scholar, Rabbi Haleva authored numerous articles and research papers on the Torah, Talmud, and Jewish theology. He was also a permanent member of the Conference of European Rabbis. Fluent in seven languages, including Turkish, Hebrew, French, English, Spanish, Ladino, and Aramaic, Rabbi Haleva’s linguistic skills reflected his dedication to fostering understanding and dialogue.

In 2002, following the passing of Chief Rabbi David Asseo, Rabbi Haleva was elected as the third Chief Rabbi of the Republic of Turkey. Reelected three times over the years, he served in this role with distinction, addressing the spiritual needs of the Jewish community and actively promoting tolerance, peace, and interfaith dialogue.

His contributions to the community and his enduring commitment to unity and harmony will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
