As part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, an exhibition of paintings titled “Painter Mihri in Istanbul, Rome, New York” has recently opened at the Vadistanbul Shopping Mall.
The exhibition showcases the works of Mihri Rasim Müşfik Açba, one of Türkiye’s pioneering contemporary female painters, and will be open to the public until March 10.
This informative documentary exhibition sheds light on the life of the renowned painter, her artistic journey, and her contributions to the development of painting in Türkiye. It was curated with the assistance of Necmi Sönmez, an independent curator based in Düsseldorf.
The exhibition, featuring 13 works, aims to depict the artist’s struggle within historical, social, and women’s rights advocacy contexts. Alongside her original artworks, it presents photographs, reproductions of her paintings, and insights into the Istanbul art scene during her era.
Açba is celebrated as the first female painter to pioneer contemporary painting in Türkiye, particularly renowned for her portraits. Notable figures she portrayed include the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and American businessman Thomas Edison.
