A ransomware attack recently targeted the central data system of the Grand Palais in Paris and 40 other museums in the Réunion des Musées Nationaux (RMN) network throughout France, as reported by the Paris prosecutor’s office. The attack was discovered on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.

Currently, two prominent RMN venues, the Grand Palais and the Château de Versailles, are hosting Olympic events. Fencing and taekwondo competitions are taking place in the Grand Palais, an iconic exhibition hall with a glass roof, while the modern pentathlon and equestrian events are being held at the Château de Versailles, the former royal residence commissioned by King Louis XIV, located 12 miles west of Paris.

Authorities in Paris stated that the ransomware attack did not disrupt the Olympic events. The Brigade for Combating Cybercrime is investigating the incident.

FranceInfo Radio reported that the attackers are demanding a ransom within 48 hours and threatening to release the encrypted financial data from the RMN network if their demands are not met.

The Louvre Museum confirmed that it was not affected by the attack.

Additionally, the Grand Palais is set to host the upcoming Art Basel Paris fair in October.
