The 10th Trans Pride Week Exhibition Collective’s exhibition “Turn and See Back: Revisiting Trans Revolutions in Turkey ” was closed with the ban decision of Beyoğlu District Governorate. The closure of the exhibition, as mandated by the district governor’s office, will continue until July 27, according to an announcement on Depo’s social media accounts.
In the post stating that the banning decision will be appealed through legal measures, the following statements were made:
“The exhibition “Turn and See Back: Revisiting Trans Revolutions in Turkey” by the 10th Trans Pride Week Exhibition Collective was banned on Thursday, July 11 with a notice issued to Depo by the Beyoğlu District Governorate.
As a result of this notice, we have been forced to immediately close the exhibition, which was originally scheduled to run through July 27.
The Depo team will be appealing the ban through legal channels. We will keep the public informed of developments in the legal process in the coming days.”
In a recent Instagram post, İstanbul Trans Pride Week stated that those interested in exhibiting the works in their galleries, shops, streets, or homes can contact them. İstanbul Trans Pride Week ended its statement with the following sentence: “You can not erase the past from the history of this land, Turn-See Back!”
Censorship of LGBTI+ exhibitions are nothing new. Previously, the exhibition “Starting from the Middle” opened by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality at Artİstanbul Feshane, and the exhibition “Grief and Pleasure” of the Odunpazarı Modern Museum had become targets of LGBTI+ hatred. While the exhibition “Starting from the Middle ” remained open despite the incidents, the exhibition “Grief and Pleasure” ended earlier than planned.
