The Culture and Tourism Ministry announced the discovery of a mosaic floor dating back to the 2nd century B.C. in the ancient city of Side, located in the southern province of Antalya.
This artifact was uncovered during works conducted under the ministry’s Heritage to the Future Project.
“Excavation and restoration efforts, which commenced in 2023 in Side as part of the Heritage to the Future project aimed at preserving TĂĽrkiye’s historical and cultural heritage, investigating archaeological sites, and promoting these treasures globally, continue to yield new discoveries and unique findings,” the ministry stated in a written announcement.
“The ongoing restoration and archaeological studies in the Monumental Fountain area, situated behind the city gate and land walls, are revealing significant findings from the annals of history,” the statement added.
The ministry noted that the mosaic floor was found in an excavation area expanded following the discovery of aqueducts behind the Monumental Fountain. “It portrays Calliope, the muse of epic poetry who inspired poets, in exquisite detail. Dating back to the 2nd century B.C., this floor showcases an impressive blend of ancient art and mythology. Additionally, frescoes illustrating the aesthetic sense and artistic richness of the period were discovered on the walls where the mosaic floor was located.”
“The mosaic floor not only provides new insights into the history of the ancient city of Side but also bolsters hopes that further archaeological studies in the region will unveil many more secrets,” the ministry concluded.
