Criminals stole one part of the lead sculpture by the iconic German artist Anselm Kiefer from a warehouse in France, reported the Guardian. The artist estimated the damages at over one million dollars (£785,000).
It is noted that the robbers broke into the artist’s warehouse in the French town of Croissy-Beaubourg and stole large iron books that were parts of some sculptures.
“CCTV footage showed four individuals breaching the car park barrier, entering the premises and cutting through the steel fence surrounding the work, before making off with lead books that were part of it,” said prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier from a neighbouring town.
Kiefer’s sculptures have been stolen before. However, it is believed that previous thefts were attempts to profit from selling the lead itself rather than the artwork.
In 2016, the artist already lost one of his works during a robbery at the same location. At that time, the artist estimated the losses at $1.5 million.
