A climate activist attached an adhesive poster to a Monet painting at the Musée d’Orsay on June 1. The woman, who claimed her action was meant to raise climate change awareness, was arrested.
The act was performed by a member of Riposte Alimentaire (Food Response), a group of environmental activists promoting sustainable food production in response to the climate crisis. This group has been targeting museums across Europe for years, with their most recent protest occurring at the Louvre last month.
This is not the first time a Monet painting has been vandalized. In 2023, two activists smeared red paint on “The Artist’s Garden at Giverny,” a painting by French Impressionist Claude Monet currently displayed at Stockholm’s National Museum. They then glued their hands to the protective glass covering the painting.
