Designer Geray Gençer, who has won numerous international awards and is a recipient of the European Design Awards Gold Award, has been selected for the 50 Books | 50 Covers 2024 competition organized by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), which recognizes the best book and book cover designs from around the world, for his Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar book series designed for Dergâh Yayınları. The winning works will be exhibited at Columbia University’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Library in New York at the end of November.

Beginning in 1923 as the Fifty Books of the Year competition, this prestigious organization represents AIGA’s longest-standing legacy in American graphic design. Known as 50 Books | 50 Covers since 1995, the competition has a long-standing tradition of highlighting the importance of book cover design. JP Haynie, jury chair for the 2024 competition, said, “As a jury, we had the opportunity to review 523 submissions from practitioners working in book design. It is encouraging to see designers continuing to engage with this medium and pushing our discipline forward.” Selected works from past competitions are added to the AIGA Design Archives, the physical archives at the Denver Art Museum (1980-2012), and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library at Columbia University’s Butler Library in New York.
Geray Gençer
Geray Gençer holds the distinction of being the first Turkish designer to be accepted into the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) selection and the New York Type Directors Club annual. While continuing his work at his own studio, Gençer also serves as a lecturer at Bahçeşehir and Işık Universities.
