From December 1 to 11, 2024, Pera Film will present its annual I’m Here! program, marking World AIDS Day with Red Reminds Me…, a thought-provoking video selection curated by the contemporary art organization Visual AIDS.
Featuring seven works by artists from around the globe, the program delves into the complex realities of living with HIV today. The title, inspired by activist and poet Stacy Jennings’ words—”Red reminds me… to be free”—challenges traditional associations of red with blood, pain, and tragedy, instead presenting it as a symbol of freedom and resilience.
The videos weave together themes of intimacy, kinship, and memory with unexpected elements like parody, theater, and horror, crafting a new visual language for HIV narratives. By reimagining the symbolism of the red ribbon, Red Reminds Me… invites audiences to reflect on the evolving meanings and emotions tied to HIV in contemporary society.
This compelling program offers a space for awareness, empathy, and dialogue, redefining how we see and understand life with HIV.
