“Oppenheimer” emerged as the big winner at the BAFTA Awards on Feb 18, scooping up seven prestigious accolades, including Best Film and Best Director for Christopher Nolan.
The star-studded ceremony, held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, saw actor Cillian Murphy also honored for his remarkable performance in “Oppenheimer,” further solidifying the film’s critical acclaim.
BAFTA chair Sarah Putt set the tone for the evening, extending a warm welcome to the illustrious guests in attendance, which notably included Prince William. The Duke of Cambridge, who graced the event without his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, offered his support to the British film industry in his role as BAFTA’s president.
However, Prince William refrained from delivering a speech, likely due to recent public interest surrounding his personal life following his father King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis last month. The absence of a speech from the prince did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the evening, as the spotlight remained firmly on the outstanding achievements of the film industry’s finest talents.
While “Oppenheimer” led the pack with its impressive haul of awards, “Poor Things” also garnered significant recognition, clinching five BAFTA wins, showcasing the depth of talent and diversity within the British film landscape.

The ceremony kicked off with David Tennant setting the tone with a pre-recorded sketch reminiscent of his lockdown series “Staged.” Joined by his co-star Michael Sheen and the adorable Bark Ruffalo, Tennant welcomed a slew of famous faces, including Tom Hiddleston and Judi Dench.
