Eco Art Lab at Istanbul Modern

Eco Art Lab strengthens the bond we have established with nature and the environment through art.

Istanbul Modern continues to offer inspiring programs that support creativity in its new museum building. Brought to life through the sponsorship of Damat Tween, Eco Art Lab strengthens the bond we have established with nature and the environment through art

Young people and adults can attend free-of-charge workshops and artist events focusing on nature, inspired by artworks at Istanbul Modern that are part our cultural heritage. Eco Art Lab invites participants to develop creative, innovative, nature-friendly art and design ideas to establish creative and deep ties with nature and to create new meanings for nature through art.

Bringing together the disciplines of ecology, art and design, Eco Art Lab consists of workshops on natural forms, the nature and transformation of objects, and upcycling activities carried out in collaboration with artists.

Eco Art Lab begins with an education program where wastepaper collected from Istanbul Modern’s recycling bins transform into art. The workshop is inspired by artworks produced with handmade paper and natural materials in the Istanbul Modern Collection. Participants start the program by examining these works in the museum’s collection. In the workshop, they tear the waste papers, wet them in the paper trough, dry them and complete the program by drawing patterns on the handmade papers they produced.

Eco Art Lab organizes upcycling workshops that focus on sustainable futures, continuity of life for all, and environmental change in collaboration with artists. In these workshops, the participants explore the methods and possibilities of transforming expired objects into art materials or design products with artists and designers from different fields of practice.
