“New: Now” Exhibition at CerModern

Ankara’s modern art center CerModern hosts the “New/Now, Version 2.0” exhibition, which brings together the bold and innovative works of young artists.

CerModern’s exhibition, New: Now, Version 2.0, which offers strong clues about the future and change this year, features well-known artists alongside talents whose names we may hear for the first time. Curated by Attila Güllü, the exhibition brings together 32 young artists.

Cultural fluidity, hybrid approaches, and new forms of expression guide the works of young artists in the exhibition. In a world shaped by migration, permeability of borders, and uncertainties, artists skillfully blend tradition with the future.

The exhibition includes works by Alper Ayaz, Bawer Doğanay, Can Demren, Christian Tunge, Derin Printshop, Dilara Altınkepçe Arslan, Ece Bal, Emir Furkan Tekkalmaz, Fırat Payan, Gözde Ju, Güray Uygun, İnan Burhanlı, Kübra Su Yıldırım, Marcus Reistad, Mathilde Melek An, Merve Yenigeldi, Nisan Talaz, Oğuzhan Atatanır, Otto Türker, Özhan Işık, Studio Pinprick, Rei Xiao, Rojbin Ekinci, Shant Alex Havıters, Taylan Türkmen, Tuğrul Şalcı, Yağmur Kara, Yağmur Çalış, Yasin Arıbuğa, Toprak Fırat, Yüksel Dal and Zeynep Baloğlu.

What Does the New: Now Exhibition Mean?

The exhibition, which presents the works of artists meticulously selected throughout the past year, offers the opportunity to witness the transformative power of art. Attila Güllü writes about the exhibition as follows: What Does the New: Now Exhibition Say? “Our exhibition takes place in a period of time when many processes related to our world and life around us are forming, breaking and changing direction suddenly and one after another, in other words, when uncertainty is dominant. Sudden changes in the world and regional scene create anxiety in people, and people have difficulty in making sense of them. Naturally, everything related to life is also reflected in art. I think that the title of our exhibition gains more meaning in the current context of our world and region. First of all, we observe that borders can no longer stop small and large migration flows. We observe that concepts, norms, compositions, classifications, and definitions that contain certainty are also being shaken by strong pressures and challenges both in quantity and quality. We see that the dominance of intersection, permeability, and hybridity is taking precedence; small/strong ideas and actions can infiltrate structures and infect them. Undoubtedly, every situation related to life, and even more so and beyond, concerns art, and in this exhibition, our young artists make us feel this firsthand.”

Another point that stands out in the New: Now exhibition is the diversity in the geographical locations of our young artists. Artists live, participate in networks, are mobile and produce everywhere: in towns, metropolises, cities and international art centers. Curator Güllü also states that this dialectic will contribute significantly to the total qualified creative action and our artists becoming an active component of global art in the future.

Another point that stands out in the exhibition is the art of fiber/weaving. The curator predicts that the richness of traditional weaving arts in this geography, which has a nomadic social history and has a lot of migration, will soon produce very high quality and universal contemporary artists.
