Taiwanese artist Tong Yang-Tze, a luminary in the world of Chinese calligraphy, has unveiled two groundbreaking works as part of The Met’s prestigious Great Hall Commission. This marks not only the third installment of the series but also Tong’s first major project in the United States—a momentous step in her illustrious career.

Breathing New Life into Calligraphy

Born in Shanghai in 1942 and based in Taipei, Tong is renowned for transforming calligraphy into a monumental and immersive experience. Her distinctive approach transcends traditional boundaries, weaving together the visual, emotional, and social dimensions of the written word. For Tong, Chinese characters are more than a linguistic tool; they are a living, cultural cornerstone, capable of profound visual and conceptual expression.

Creating Art from the Floor to the Heavens

In her Taipei studio, Tong paints on the floor, her brushstrokes charged with tension and rhythm that defy the confines of the medium. The result: oversized characters that challenge conventional notions of composition and space. Her calligraphy inhabits three dimensions, engaging viewers not only through the art of writing but also through an architectural dialogue with The Met’s historic Great Hall.

The Commission: A Meeting of Past and Present

The Great Hall Commission series invites contemporary artists to respond to The Met’s collection and environment, creating a bridge between their work and the Museum’s legacy. Tong’s project amplifies this dialogue, connecting the timeless elegance of calligraphy with the vibrant energy of one of the world’s most iconic museums.

A Testament to Cross-Cultural Creativity

Made possible by a coalition of patrons, including the Director’s Fund, Oscar L. Tang, and Winsing Arts Foundation, this commission not only elevates Tong Yang-Tze’s extraordinary talent but also highlights the universal appeal of Chinese calligraphy. Her work underscores the power of art to transcend linguistic and cultural barriers, inviting audiences into a shared experience of beauty and contemplation.

As The Met continues to reimagine its spaces through contemporary commissions, Tong Yang-Tze’s monumental calligraphy stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of traditional art forms, reinterpreted for modern audiences. For visitors to the Great Hall, her work offers a chance to witness the fusion of history, culture, and innovation.
