Fresh off her Golden Bear win at the Berlinale, acclaimed actor Tilda Swinton is stepping into a new role—this time as a curator. She will oversee Supersonic Mediaeval, a captivating exhibition showcasing the work of British artist and designer Marianna Kennedy at Christie’s Paris from May 5 to 11.

Organized by PLVR Zurich, the exhibition offers a retrospective of Kennedy’s masterful use of materials such as resin, wood, bronze, and Murano glass. A long-time admirer and collector of Kennedy’s work, Swinton brings her unique perspective to this presentation, highlighting the designer’s extraordinary craftsmanship and artistic vision.

Swinton, reflecting on Kennedy’s work, described it as existing in a rare space where history and innovation seamlessly converge. “Marianna’s work has always sprung from and lived in, for me, a particularly sweet spot—one where the ancient and resonant meet the unknown and surprising,” she stated. This perspective forms the essence of Supersonic Mediaeval, an exhibition that celebrates exquisite craftsmanship, vibrant color, and the fusion of the familiar with the unexpected. “Its atmosphere brings with it a breath to the heart of condition, renewal, and of bright new horizons ahead,” Swinton added.

Kennedy, who was born in Canada, studied at the National College of Art in Dublin before continuing her education at the prestigious Slade School of Art in London. In 2006, she established her studio in Spitalfields, London, where she began crafting her now-iconic gilded mirrors. Today, her refined and contemporary approach to traditional materials—ranging from resin and bronze to Murano glass—has secured her work a place in numerous private collections.

The exhibition’s title, Supersonic Mediaeval, playfully juxtaposes two seemingly opposing ideas, mirroring Kennedy’s unique ability to bridge past and present. From intricately carved and gilded mirrors to elegantly designed lamps, her pieces reflect a deep commitment to both artistry and craftsmanship. Swinton’s curatorial vision highlights this delicate balance, offering a fresh perspective on the designer’s extraordinary oeuvre.
