The launch of the “Museum by Night” project, aimed at offering visitors a unique experience of Türkiye’s historical sites and cultural heritage under the night sky, took place on March 8 at the Pamukkale Hierapolis ancient city in the western province of Denizli. Officials from the Culture and Tourism Ministry and state protocol participated in the event.
Hierapolis now joins Ephesus as the second ancient site to be illuminated after sunset. Professor Celal Şimşek, head of the Pamukkale University’s Archaeology Department and coordinator of Hierapolis excavation and restoration, emphasized the unparalleled fusion of natural travertines and archaeological wonders at the site. “After Ephesus, this is the second site to be illuminated at night. This region offers a warm climate, allowing visitors to enjoy its beauty comfortably even on hot evenings,” he noted.
Turan Veli Akyol, Provincial Culture, and Tourism Director highlighted that the Night Museum project would kick off with the tourism season. He stated, “Local and foreign tourists, as well as groups organized by travel agencies, will have the opportunity to experience a night museum tour here. Visitors will marvel at the natural beauty of Pamukkale’s travertines, especially during nighttime. This project will enable tourists, particularly those struggling with the summer heat, to explore Pamukkale, a world wonder, under the stars. They will relish the enchanting views of the Hell’s Gate, the Ancient Theater, and the travertines under the night sky. This initiative will greatly enhance tourist experiences and accommodations in Denizli.”
