Necati Tosuner, one of the important writers of Turkish literature, passed away at the hospital where he had been receiving treatment. Born in Ankara in 1944, Tosuner produced works in short stories, novels, essays, and children’s literature over a writing career spanning more than half a century; he developed a distinctive narrative voice in contemporary Turkish literature, especially through the intense, restrained, and poetic style he cultivated in the short story.

Awards

In 1971, he was still a young writer when he won the TRT Short Story Achievement Award for his story “İki Gün.” This was followed by the Turkish Language Association Novel Award in 1978 for Sancı… Sancı…; the Haldun Taner Short Story Award in 1997 for “Armağan”; the Sait Faik Short Story Award in 1999 for Güneş Giderken; the Ömer Asım Aksoy Essay Award in 2006 for Elde Kitap; the Attilâ İlhan Award in 2008 for Kasırganın Gözü; and the Ebubekir Hazım Tepeyran Novel Award in 2014 for Susmak Nasıl da Yoruyor İnsanı!, all of which marked the consistent and strong trajectory of Tosuner’s literary career. With Sen ve Kendin, published in 2020, he pushed the boundaries of the novel as a genre; Salgında Öyküler (2022), written out of the experience of the pandemic, carried both the spirit of the period and the human relationship with loneliness into the text. He was honored with the 7th Antalya Literature Days Honor Award in 2022, the Kitap Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023, and the Erdal Öz Literature Award in 2024.
