Museum Receives Most Extensive Collection Donation

The Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum (IRHM) has recently received the most extensive collection donation in its history.

The Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum (IRHM), which is Turkey’s largest, and first museum dedicated to plastic arts, has recently received the most extensive collection donation in its history.

Lale-Cengiz Akıncı donated their extensive collection to the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum in honor of the Republic’s 100th anniversary. To showcase this donation, the museum will be hosting an exhibition called “ARTI 700” featuring select works from the collection’s first part. The exhibition, curated by Ali Kayaalp and collection art consultant Ebru Nalan Sülün, will open on September 2nd.

The initial donation of 700 pieces comprises exceptional Turkish paintings, sculptures, and ceramic art. These pieces have significant historical value and have contributed to enhancing the collection of the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum. The exhibition showcases the evolution of Turkish plastic art from the early Republican period to the present day, allowing visitors to explore its historical journey.

In the first exhibition, there are 163 works on display, including various artworks created by different artists such as Halil Paşa, İbrahim Çallı, Sami Yetik, Hüseyin Gezer, Zeki Kocamemi, Ali Avni Çelebi, Hale Asaf, Zühtü Müridoğlu, Léopold Lévy, Nuri İyem, İsmail Hakkı Oygar, Aliye Berger, Avni Arbaş, Zeki Faik Izer, Nurullah Berk, Burhan Uygur, Naile Akıncı, Eşref Üren, Neş’e Erdok, Tiraje Dikmen, Cemal Tollu, Cevat Dereli, Nedim Günsür, Elif Naci, Ercüment Kalmık, Eren Eyüboğlu, Neset Günal, Şükriye Dikmen , Ferruh Başağa, Utku Varlık, Turan Erol.

About the Akıncı collection

Cengiz Akıncı, the son of the renowned artist Naile Akıncı and a graduate of the State Academy of Fine Arts, began his art collection at the young age of sixteen, with the encouragement of his mother. Over the years, the collection curated by Lale-Cengiz Akıncı has grown and diversified, primarily featuring works by Academy alumni. The collection encompasses a wide range of art forms, including landscapes, still lifes, figurative and abstract pieces, print paintings, and sculptures, as well as ceramics and glass works. The collection mainly covers the post-1930s era and represents various artistic periods.
