Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has passed away at the age of 78, her spokesperson confirmed.
Born in Hampstead in December 1946, Faithfull rose to fame with hits like As Tears Go By, which reached the UK Top 10 in 1964. She also starred in films such as The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968).
A defining figure of the 1960s, she was romantically linked to Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, inspiring songs like Wild Horses and You Can’t Always Get What You Want. After struggling with heroin addiction in the 1970s, she made a remarkable comeback with her critically acclaimed album Broken English.
Paying tribute, Jagger remembered Faithfull as “a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer, and a great actress,” expressing his deep sadness at her passing.
Keith Richards, her longtime bandmate, expressed his sorrow over Faithfull’s passing, saying he was “so sad” and that he would deeply miss her.
Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood also paid tribute on Instagram, sharing two posts—one featuring a vintage photo of himself, Faithfull, and Richards in a recording studio, captioned “Farewell dear Marianne,” and another more recent image of the two, writing, “Marianne will be dearly missed. Bless her xx.”
A statement from her spokesperson confirmed that Faithfull passed away peacefully in London, surrounded by her loving family. “She will be dearly missed,” the statement added.
