First images from Jean-Luc Godard’s final film Scénarios will be premiering at Cannes Film Festival.

“Scénarios,” an 18-minute short film, was completed by the filmmaker in 2022, just one day prior to his passing via an assisted suicide procedure in Switzerland. Additionally, Godard crafted a 34-minute introduction to accompany the film, described as a blend of “still and moving images, halfway between reading and seeing,” which will be screened alongside the main feature.

It’s worth noting that last year, Cannes also saw the premiere of “Trailer of the Film That Will Never Exist: ‘Phony Wars’,” offering a glimpse into an unfinished documentary by Godard. While some considered it his final cinematic offering, earlier reports from 2022 by author Nicole Brenez, who was collaborating on a book about Godard, suggested that the renowned director had planned, directed, and supervised several other films before his passing.

“Scénarios” is featured in the Cannes Classics sidebar of this year’s festival, which also showcases special presentations of cinematic masterpieces such as Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai” and Jacques Demy’s “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.” Additionally, the sidebar includes premieres of documentaries exploring the lives of Faye Dunaway and Jim Henson.

In the main lineup, notable films include “Kinds of Kindness,” reuniting director Yorgos Lanthimos with actress Emma Stone, Andrea Arnold’s “Bird” starring Barry Keoghan, Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” and George Miller’s highly anticipated “Mad Max” prequel, “Furiosa.”
