The 82nd Golden Globes, scheduled for January 5, 2025, promises a star-studded night celebrating the year’s finest in film and television. Leading the pack is Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying Emilia Pérez, a surreal narco-thriller musical about a Mexican drug lord who transitions to life as a woman. The film earned a staggering 10 nominations, including Best Musical or Comedy, Best Non-English Language Film, and Best Director for Audiard. Starring Karla Sofía Gascón in the titular role, alongside Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez has positioned itself as a frontrunner in this year’s awards season.

The Contenders for Top Film Honors

In the Best Film – Drama category, The Brutalist leads with seven nominations. Directed by Brady Corbet, this poignant drama follows Adrien Brody as a Hungarian Jewish architect navigating post-Holocaust America. It faces stiff competition from Conclave, a high-stakes papal drama starring Ralph Fiennes, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two, the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, Nickel Boys, and the historical thriller September 5.

For Best Film – Musical or Comedy, Emilia Pérez competes with the whimsical Broadway adaptation Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Sean Baker’s introspective Anora, the tennis love-triangle drama Challengers with Zendaya, Jesse Eisenberg’s darkly comedic A Real Pain, and Demi Moore’s horror-infused The Substance.

An Evolving Golden Globes

As the Globes enter their second year under new ownership, following a 2021 exposé that led to significant changes in their voting body, the awards aim to rebuild their reputation as a reliable Oscars predictor. The ceremony’s diverse slate of nominees, ranging from Hollywood blockbusters to international and independent gems, reflects a broader and more inclusive approach.

Hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, the January 5 gala promises an evening of glamour, entertainment, and recognition of cinematic brilliance, setting the stage for the Academy Awards race just weeks later.
