Speaking at the opening ceremony, IMPS Acting Director Aygül Uzun Yavaşoğlu said: “The exhibition highlights the extraordinary collection of Lale and Cengiz Akıncı. It represents the hard work of many individuals, and we are thrilled to see it become part of our museum’s legacy.”
Curator Dr. Ali Kayaalp remarked on IMPS’s significance as Turkey’s first national museum, noting its central role in the country’s modern art history. “Our collections encapsulate the journey of modern Turkish art. Adding this new chapter to the museum’s story is a moment of pride for us,” he said.
Dr. Kayaalp further explained that the Akıncı family first donated part of their collection in 2023 under the title “ARTI 700”. He said “In September 2023, we showcased this collection under the name ‘ARTI 700’. That exhibition included 160 paintings and three sculptures. Today, we are delighted to present the second segment of this collection. This exhibition features a rich variety of sculptures, ceramics, and glassworks. The ‘Diverse Dimensions’ exhibition is not only significant for our museum but also for Turkish art and exhibition history. I sincerely thank everyone who contributed.”
Collector Cengiz Akıncı shared his journey of collecting art by saying “I began collecting at the age of 16. Both my wife and I come from families with academic backgrounds. Guided by the intellectual foundation provided by our families, we focused on bringing together the most important names and works in Turkish art within our collection.” He also expressed his happiness by saying “I believe the true recognition should go to Turkish artists rather than the collection itself. We are deeply grateful to the artists who inspired us to create this collection.”
The second section of the Collector’ Honor Award at the TÜYAP 19th International Art Fair winner collection which features works by renowned artists such as Halil Paşa, İbrahim Çallı, and others, will remain open to visitors until March 28.
