The UQAM Design Centre is hosting Buone Nuove: Women Architects of Change, an exhibition highlighting the contributions of women architects throughout history.
The exhibition, which celebrates the impact of female architects on architectural history, has opened in Montreal, Canada. Originally launched by the MAXXI Museum in Rome in 2021, the exhibition has traveled through cities such as Stockholm, Doha, New Delhi, Berlin, and Toronto before arriving in Montreal, where it merges with the city’s vibrant creative spirit.
Buone Nuove: Women Architects of Change explores the influence of women on modern and contemporary architecture, showcasing the works of international female architects from Italy to Canada. The exhibition features pioneering figures like Lina Bo Bardi, Gae Aulenti, and Zaha Hadid while also highlighting the innovative approaches of emerging women architects.
For its Montreal edition, the exhibition includes two new sections: one featuring a selection of works by Quebec-based female architects and another displaying period furniture designed by Italian architects, paying homage to the golden age of design.
Beyond offering a historical perspective, the exhibition fosters new discussions on architecture, urbanization, and gender dynamics. It also presents video works produced during MAXXI’s Architecture Film Summer School in 2021, showcasing women’s contributions in activism, academia, curatorial work, and writing.
One of the exhibition’s interactive components, Postcards from Visitors, invites attendees to share stories and visuals about female architects. This initiative aims to broaden recognition of women in architecture while allowing visitors to actively contribute to the exhibition’s narrative.
