Published by ArtDog, Beyond Borders and Prejudices assembles Madra’s essays and lectures addressing diverse geographies that remain highly contested today. The book focuses on the political, economic, and cultural transformations shaping art scenes in Turkey and across multiple regions worldwide, offering a thirty-year panorama of the fragile artistic landscape of the post-truth era.
Through The Lenses of Modern, Postmodern, and Relational Aesthetics
Examining art and cultural practices through the lenses of modern, postmodern, and relational aesthetics within Turkey and its wider geography—including the Middle East, the South Caucasus, and the Balkans—the book interrogates artistic production in political, economic, and social terms. It explores structures of communication and collaboration, artistic practices, and the shifting positions of the artist, critic, and curator, while situating the region within broader sociopolitical and economic perspectives. With its focus on geographies marked by ongoing social and economic upheavals, as well as political, religious, and ethnic conflicts intertwined with the complex processes of globalization, the book also carries a distinct historical dimension.
The event will address the transformation of the art world from the 1990s to the present and the survival strategies that have emerged across different geographies within today’s sociopolitical context. Moderated by Sinan Eren Erk, curator, art writer, and editor of the book, the discussion will expand upon the critical questions raised by Beyond Borders and Prejudices.
History of Survival Strategies Developed in The Post-truth Era
From regional dynamics to institutional policies and modes of global interconnectedness, the issues opened up by the book will be examined through a multilayered framework aligned with the contemporary sociopolitical climate. Drawing on more than four decades of experience, Beral Madra offers a unique vantage point on the transformations of the art world in Turkey and internationally. Her diplomatic approach and cross-geographical modes of reading form one of the central axes of both the book and the conversation. In this sense, the event invites art professionals, art audiences, institutions, and independent actors alike to revisit the history of survival strategies developed in the post-truth era.
Beyond Borders and Prejudices is published with the support of Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi.
The event will be held in Turkish.
