The New York art market is gearing up for a high-stakes auction season this November, with top auction houses presenting works by celebrated artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, René Magritte, and Georgia O’Keeffe, among others. Following strong sales in London and Paris, collectors and market observers are hopeful that these auctions could signal a revival in the art market’s performance.
Christie’s will host a significant sale featuring works from designer and philanthropist Mica Ertegun’s collection, including Magritte’s L’empire des lumières, with an estimate of over $95 million, and pieces by Hockney, Miró, and Ruscha. Also of note is Basquiat’s Untitled (1982) portrait from the Brant Foundation, anticipated to fetch between $20 million and $30 million, alongside Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity-Nets (RDUEL) linked to dealer Inigo Philbrick, with an estimate of $2 million to $3 million.
Sotheby’s will showcase modernist highlights, including Giacometti’s Buste (Tête tranchante) (Diego), valued at $10 million to $15 million, and Tiffany’s Danner Memorial Window from Alan Gerry’s collection, estimated at $5 million to $7 million. Additionally, Mark Rothko’s Untitled (Yellow and Blue) is up for sale at Sotheby’s Hong Kong with an estimated price of $29 million to $35 million.
The spotlight will also be on works by O’Keeffe, with Lake George Autumn appearing in Christie’s 20th Century Evening Sale, priced between $3 million and $5 million, and her White Primrose in Bonhams’ auction with a $4 million to $6 million estimate. Phillips will feature Grace Hartigan’s Pond Memory from the Anbinder collection, expected to sell for $300,000 to $500,000.
These upcoming auctions reflect the resilience of the global art market, bringing together collectors and enthusiasts for a momentous November season in New York.
