Nuri Kuzucan’s exhibition “All Fragments of a Picture,” which offers a journey where space, memory, and perception are in constant flux, is on view at Galerist until June 21.
Exploring personal space and urban landscape in his paintings, Nuri Kuzucan invites the viewer into a visual and intellectual dialogue with space in his exhibition at Galerist. The exhibition presents a conceptual journey where space, memory, and perception exist in a state of continuous transformation rather than stillness. Without imposing any guiding narrative, Kuzucan creates an experiential area that highlights the existence and memory of the historical 19th-century building housing the gallery.
At the core of the exhibition is a respect for the space’s own existence. Instead of imposing a hierarchical order on the space, the artist approaches it as an equal element, freeing the viewer’s perception from a fixed, singular viewpoint.
Kuzucan’s paintings go beyond merely existing as surfaces on the walls; they interact with each other and their surroundings within a flow that spreads throughout the entire exhibition. Dualities such as emptiness and fullness, light and shadow, negative and positive space become complementary parts that establish a constantly shifting visual balance, surpassing the limits of a single narrative.
Nuri Kuzucan reflects on the impact of the modern city on its inhabitants by examining feelings of loneliness through abstract forms reminiscent of concrete blocks. While constructing an imaginary city, he creates a perceivable unity with overlapping paint layers and small geometric arrangements. His choice of materials also offers a critical approach to modernism, especially by using tape to intensify the viewer’s experience. Kuzucan’s unique perspective is distinctly felt from his early works featuring interior walks to his later bird’s-eye view interpretations of cities.
The modern city, as a defining and shaping element of contemporary life culture, holds an important place in his production. Kuzucan has held solo exhibitions in Istanbul and Hong Kong and has participated in shows in Basel, Berlin, and Dubai.
