With his latest exhibition Les Demoiselles Revisited in Paris, Bedri Baykam offers a critical perspective on art history and social representations, inviting viewers into a multi-layered visual and intellectual journey. Opening on May 6, 2025, at Galerie S/Beaubourg, the exhibition will run through June 14 and marks a significant conceptual milestone in Baykam’s career. Bringing together works from different periods, the show offers a panoramic view of the artist’s multifaceted practice, blending aesthetic encounter with theoretical reflection.
The exhibition is accompanied by a special catalogue featuring an extensive critical essay by art theorist Prof. Hasan Bülent Kahraman and an introductory text by gallery director Micaela Neveu, both of which enrich the exhibition’s conceptual framework.
Baykam’s Work
In this new series, Baykam deepens his long-standing dialogue with Pablo Picasso’s iconic painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907). Les Demoiselles Revisited not only engages in a critical confrontation with this modernist masterpiece, but also reopens discussions around themes such as the female body, eroticism, representation, the gaze, and power dynamics—this time through another symbolic Parisian figure, Madame Claude.
Developed through a multi-layered visual language, these works articulate the artist’s critical stance toward both art history and prevailing societal norms. Featuring pieces from various phases of his career, the exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of Baykam’s rich and expansive artistic production.
The catalogue essay by Prof. Hasan Bülent Kahraman and the curatorial foreword by Micaela Neveu further contextualize the conceptual foundation of the exhibition.
