One of the most important awards in British cinema, the BAFTA Film Awards, were presented for the 79th time this year. The ceremony organized by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts was held at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Regarded as one of the most decisive nights before the Oscars for the international film industry, this year’s most talked-about production at the BAFTAs was One Battle After Another.

The film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson stood out as the biggest winner of the night with six awards. In addition to Best Film and Best Director, the production also won Best Adapted Screenplay, Editing, and Cinematography. Sean Penn was deemed worthy of the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in the film.

One of the biggest surprises of the night took place in the Best Actor category. Robert Aramayo won the award for his performance in I Swear, which tells the life story of Tourette syndrome advocate John Davidson. Aramayo also drew attention by receiving the Rising Star Award on the same night.

 Hamnet

The Best Actress award was given to Jessie Buckley for her performance in Hamnet. Portraying Agnes, Shakespeare’s wife, Buckley delivered one of the most talked-about moments of the night with her speech on stage. While accepting the award, the actress emphasized that this achievement did not belong to her alone and said: “This is truly unbelievable. This award belongs to the women who taught me different paths in the past, today, and in the future.”

Speaking about her childhood, Buckley said that she once dreamed of becoming an actress but never thought it would be possible. She concluded her speech by addressing her daughter and stated that motherhood is the most important role in her life. The film also won the Best British Film award.

The film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, was among the standout productions of the night with three awards. The film won Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Score. Wunmi Mosaku, who portrayed the character Annie, said in her speech on stage that she found traces of her own past and roots in her role. The award for the film’s music went to Ludwig Göransson.

At the ceremony, the Norwegian production Sentimental Value received the Best Foreign Film award. The Best Animated Film award was given to Zootropolis 2, while the Best Documentary award went to Mr. Nobody Against Putin.
