Artist Genco Gülan’s “Restless Poseidon” sculpture, which draws attention to climate disasters and salutes the ancient Greek and Middle Eastern gods of disaster, began to be exhibited off the Büyükada ferry pier on September 10. The work, which attracted great interest from the islanders, was later dismantled by the Coast Guard.
The artist’s floating sculpture was chained to the sea by the Büyükada Ferry Pier, as the sculpture was appearing and disappearing and welcoming the islanders and daily visitors.
However, this week, when the artwork started to be exhibited, it was dismantled by the Coast Guard teams because it was hindering the manoeuvres of the boats. The 80 x 35 x 35 cm sculpture symbolizes Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of seas and earthquakes. It was planned to be exhibited throughout September.
The statement made by the Islands Art Initiative noted; “Restless Poseidon” will be reunited with the sea in the Islands, where it belongs, in October.
The initiative also said this project aims to transform the Islands into a region that is active 365 days with art while targeting to develop art tourism.
