One of the opening exhibitions of Istanbul Modern’s new museum building, “Always Here” features artworks that have been acquired through the Women Artists Fund. Sponsored by Bank of America, the exhibition brings together works by 11 women artists.
Istanbul Modern Women Artists Fund was established in 2016 with the aim of supporting the production of women artists in Türkiye, increasing public awareness of their work and strenghthening their representation through exhibitions. The works acquired to the museum collection through the fund will be brought together for the first time in the exhibition “Always Here.”
The exhibition presents a narrative within the framework of themes such as body politics, memory, and historiography explored by women artists from different generations who hold an important place in the history of art in Türkiye.
Bringing together works in different mediums such as painting, sculpture, drawing, and video, the exhibition includes works from different periods by Mehtap Baydu, Hera Büyüktaşcıyan, İnci Eviner, Selma Gürbüz, Nilbar Güreş, Sibel Horada, Bengü Karaduman, Zeynep Kayan, Ayça Telgeren, Güneş Terkol, and Burcu Yağcıoğlu. The works of artists, which have been acquired to the museum collection with the support of the Women Artists Fund, can be seen not only in “Always Here” but also in Istanbul Modern’s collection exhibition.
Speaking about the exhibition Istanbul Modern Chair of the Board, Oya Eczacıbaşı said: ”One of Istanbul Modern’s primary goals is to expand and support the production and visibility of women artists in line with sustainable strategies. Through the Istanbul Modern Women Artists Fund that we established in 2016, we have acquired numerous artworks for our museum collection in the past seven years.”
